How to get the numbered folder icons?

Trying to do a character arc, following the example in the example script. Can’t find any mention of this in the docs or videos.

Also the old YouTube videos have a button for arcs that I don’t have in 3.2.62 on Mac. Is that superceded by something?

Hi Michael,

Version 4.0 is going to Alpha today or tomorrow, and all the videos will be replaced. This is exactly because some features had previous names, and it’s confusing. What was once called “Arcs”, are now simply called “Blocks”.

With Emotion Tracking, we’re falling a little bit out of love with the old way of segmenting beats, such as putting them into numbered folders, in order to enforce a strict arc.

The numbered folder feature was a bit of a copout, and was removed, because what you really need is to get a dependency graph back. The whiteboard started 10 years ago as a pure dependency graph, but everyone thought it was a timeline, so it morphed over some years to be purely a timeline. And now we find ourselves without a dependency graph.

A dependency graph becomes very useful when you have complex plot, such as what a detective has to discover in order to draw a certain conclusion. But we decided to hold our horses a bit on making a new dependency graph, because we’d rather simplify the app and make sure that everyone understands that, before piling on more features. You’ll see Causality remove a lot of features where we made executive decisions about their ultimate usefulness.

Now, with Emotion Tracking, and noting which needles move up and down on each beat, I personally find as a writer that this is all the support I need, and perhaps dividing arcs into literal folders that have to be daisy-chained in a certain way, was overkill. So we want everyone using 4.0, and find out how satisfying this generally is.

In your Hollywood Camera Work account, make sure that you’re subscribed to Causality notifications, then we’ll get an email about the Alpha.

Best,

Can’t wait to try it. Thanks for the reply and especially thank you for the software!

Thanks!
