Hello,
I had multiple times, where versions have been “getting lost” in the sync. I had synced the newest version and my teampartners were able to open the newest version. But the next time I opened the folder the newest version was gone and an older version as “overwritten” everything. Is there a way to prevent this? Or double-check what version is synced? I’m confused because the newer version was uploaded since the others could open it.
The sync algorithm in the current app is primitive, and just syncs based on time stamps. The new 3D version of the app coming later this year has an infinitely more modern system that’s real-time collaboration and commit-based sync, so these kinds of problems don’t exist.
So for right now, the solution is to not have the app open on a device where the scene isn’t being edited, because if that app isn’t set to sync, once it saves whatever it has open, that becomes the latest version, and then that’s what gets distributed. Did I say that it was primitive? It’s amazing we’ve survived relatively unscathed for this long.
I’d love if you could try to to limit the number of devices that just have the scene open without being actively edited, and let me know if that improves.
Because I’m realizing one thing that I have to check. We recently moved our platform from AWS in Ireland to OVHCloud in Frankfurt. That’s one time-zone off. It shouldn’t matter, because the bucket used for sync is still on S3 in AWS Ireland, and we should be using UTC timestamps everywhere. But now I’m suddenly getting nervous that we’re accidentally relying on the server’s local time for something, because that will have changed by an hour. I don’t believe this is a real thing, only that I want to check it.
Thank you for the answer.
Then it was probably someone who still had it open on their phone with the old version while everyone was already working with the newer one and when they closed all their phone apps it got overwritten. It’s easy to forget to close apps properly.
It obviously shouldn’t be necessary. It’s only that the sync algorithm is ancient, and there’s no real fix other than a different app, and that’s the new 3D/AI Shot Designer coming later in the year.
